3D Dingbats: Bringing a Dingbat to Life

Shirley E. Kaiser, M.A. is the owner of SKDesigns, a Web design and development business she started in 1996. She specializes in Web design and graphics, architecture, and team projects. Shirley has authored dozens of tutorials and articles related to graphics, Web design and the Internet, and most recently began a newsletter on Web site tips.

In addition, she's a mother of two, and has been a professional musician most of her life. Shirley has a Master's degree in piano performance and literature and has given piano concerts and workshops for many years.

Her new CD, Journey Within, will be released soon.

But first, a little introduction:
A while back, I presented a guest tutorial, and I promised that I would be on the lookout for other experts to bring you a slightly different twist on subjects. Each writer has his or her own style and expertise, and it is good for everyone to have a little variety. You get a new outlook on the familiar subjects, and I take a new look at this column, more as a visitor.

I have a real treat for you this week. Shirley Kaiser is a talented and innovative Web designer, musician and writer, and I have talked her into sharing some of her expertise with us. Shirley has written many tutorials on Web design, ranging from HTML editor techniques, to how to work with third-party filters.

In one of life's little ironies, Shirley's tutorial is based on working with dingbats. Nearly a year ago, my very first tutorial for this column was on ... you guessed it, working with dingbats. Shirley takes the simple dingbat and turns it into a stunning 3D graphic, all with a little graduated fill work, and a little Eye Candy "magic."

So, read on, and enjoy. There is a wealth of information in these pages, and your work cannot help but improve when you can breathe life into a little dingbat as you will see here.

As always – have fun, and I'll be back next time ... Wendy Peck
