Graphic Greats: Text on Display

Plain Text with Style

Southbank International School
The Southbank site has no fancy text, but the designer has used bold and light weight text in creative combination to add impact. The text throughout is a little jagged, but I thought that the designer did a wonderful job of working with the color and weight variations in text to create energy and add an artistic touch.

This site is an excellent example of how light and heavy fonts can be used effectively to separate words and ideas, without cluttering the message with graphic images or distorted text.

An internal page on the Sapient site. The designer has used a CSS class file to adjust font size and line spacing for a unique look.

Designed by a team at Sapient, headed by Clement Mok, Chief Creative Officer. Mr. Mok is also the author of Designing Business: Multiple Media, Multiple Disciplines from Adobe Press, a book about applying design and business principles within the context of digital media.

Sapient
This is not the first time I have featured the Sapient site, but this time, I would like to focus on the text use.

Their entry page shows a style of text quite familiar to us from print ads and magazines, yet rarely seen on the Web. Varied sizes and font weights are used to bring life to text, and highlight important words from the phrase. On this site, only the colored treatment of the photo and the text form the active design ... yet it is catchy and attractive.

I would also like to draw your attention to a paragraph on an interior page. The designer has used a CSS class file to create a different font size and line spacing for this paragraph. Again, not unusual in the print world, but certainly not commonplace on the Web.
