Hierarchical Menus Ver. 3 - Addendum IX (v3.09)
enabling menus for IE5 Macintosh
| IMPORTANT NOTE: This column introduces a new version of the hierarchical menu script. All information is valid at the time of writing. New browser versions released after publication may not behave as outlined. The script is constantly under revision, with new features added, problems fixed and new browser versions addressed. Read this column, and future columns, to learn how we built the menu script. Use the most recent version of the script, always available in HierMenus Central. |
This addendum deals with modifications to the Hierarchical Menus Version 3 script, enabling execution in IE5 for Macintosh.
You must be familiar with the script to appreciate the discussion. |
Welcome to the ninth, and definitely the last, maintenance release of Hierarchical Menus, Version 3.
(I know I keep saying that)
Version 4 of the menu script is now ready, and will be released and discussed in detail over the weeks to come. It will be radically different and more powerful than version 3, but many HM users may not want to upgrade immediately.
The biggest drawback of HM version 3 is its lack of support for IE Macintosh. With the release of IEMac Version 5, possibly the best browser ever released for the Mac and a DHTML browser we can work with, we have modified our script to support IE users on the Macintosh platform. You may use this latest version (3.09) while awaiting or deciding on the upgrade.
IE5 for Macintosh has received a lot of positive press, and deservedly so. It is assuredly the most standards-compliant browser released from the "big two" vendors. See WebReview's CSS support table.
Thankfully, it has little in common with its predecessors, the three fourth generation versions of IEMac, so we can finally adapt existing scripts with a minimum of hassle. There is still some hassle, however, as we will see in the following pages.
