3D Glossary--Beveling

Beveling

Beveling is a method of adding geometric detail to polygonal surfaces. It is a species of extrusion.

Beveling a polygon is a two-part process. First, a smaller, by similarly shaped polygon is inset into the interior of the polygon to be beveled. This process creates a group of polygons surrounding the inset polygon.

Second, the inset polygon is translated backwards or forwards along its normal (which is the same normal as the original polygon). The effect is to punch out or punch in a relief, with slanted sides connecting back to the original polygon. Beveling is extremely common with 3-D text objects.
