The Web Standards Project, originally launched in 1998, is due to relaunch Tuesday. The brainchild of Glenn Davis, George Olsen, Jeffrey Zeldman, and friends, the Web Standards Project (WaSP) is dedicated to the adoption of web standards for browsers, authoring tools, and web designers. By using standards rather than proprietary solutions, you can reduce the cost and complexity of web development while at the same time increasing accessibility and digital shelf life.
Shirley Kaiser was kind enough to give me a sneak peek, and the new design looks great. Complete with a new look, a new blog, and a new attitude, WaSP hopes to do for web designers what it did for browser manufacturers and authoring tool makers.
The all-star staff has expanded as well. WaSP does not equal just Jeffrey Zeldman, as wonderful as he is. WaSP is actually a group of dedicated folks, including steering committee members like Tim Bray of XML and Antarcti.ca fame. Newcomers include Eric Costello, J. David Eisenberg, Owen Briggs, Molly E. Holzschlag, Shirley Kaiser, and Scott Andrew LePera. Each person has an area of responsibility, and many contribute to the new blog, run by Movable Type.
Jeffrey Zeldman says of the new crew: "Eric co-authored the site's CSS layout with long-time steering committee member Todd Fahrner, and contributes to the site's Buzz blog. Shirley and Molly are in charge of the educational LEARN section, to which David and others contribute. Scott is a DOM/scripting expert and a member of the BUZZ blog team. David did a lot of the heavy lifting involved in finishing the site construction. Owen is a CSS subject matter expert, book author (with Steve and Scott) and contributor to BUZZ blog.
Additionally, new members Drew McLellan and Rachel Andrew formed the Dreamweaver Task Force that helped Macromedia greatly improve the standards compliance and accessibility of Dreamweaver MX."
As part of their efforts to educate and convert web designers and developers, the WaSP crew plans to build up the "learn" section with tutorials and articles to help people understand and implement web standards, in addition to adding more helpful link resources. Molly Holzschlag and Shirley Kaiser are the leaders of this section.
We asked Jeffrey Zeldman about the relaunch of WaSP.
WR: How would you all characterize the second phase of the Web Standards Project? What do you hope to accomplish? You've got the browser makers won over, and Adobe, Macromedia, and Microsoft seem to be listening. What's next? Win over all the designers out there?
JZ: Exactly: Win over all the designers out there, who think <li> means "add a bullet to the page" and who believe that <div class="blueinnersubheader"><span class="maketextlarger">subhead </span></div> is a substitute for <h2>, and who think <h4><dt>word</dt></h4> is markup.
Secondarily but also importantly:
Fight to ensure that authoring tools support standards and accessibility. Much progress has been made. More can be made and will.
And continue to help browser makers fine-tune their compliance with existing and emerging standards. Occasionally (when necessary) through major campaigns. But primarily by keeping in touch with browser company engineers, making them aware of problems, and helping WaSP supporters submit accurate bug reports to the people best positioned to fix the problems.
WR: What does WaSP 2 mean for the Web?
JZ: No more Netscape-only versions. No more IE-only versions. No more WAP versions. No more plain text or "printer-friendly" versions. Now that browser makers have finally heeded the call of web standards, their long-delayed promise ("one document fits all") is finally coming true. Web standards streamline web development and substantially lower its cost (especially important these days) while enabling Web publishers to create dynamic, accessible sites that reach more users than ever before.
But only if designers and developers understand and USE web standards. And many aren't.
Thousands of web designers and developers are still using old school methods that disregard document structure, ignore accessibility, and favor proprietary code over standards such as the W3C DOM.
To help our peers grasp and harness the true power of web standards, The Web Standards Project will relaunch this week with new members, a new look, new site features, new content, a new Mission, and new initiatives focused on developer education and standards compliance in authoring tools as well as browsers.
Standards in browsers was half the battle. We didn't think we'd win. Now that we have what we asked for, it remains to persuade our peers of the importance and benefits (to themselves, their clients, and the folks who use their sites) of designing and building with web standards.
The URL of the site when it's relaunched this week will be https://www.webstandards.org/. Same as it ever was.
