style
object's position property can have three values: "static"
, "absolute"
, and "relative"
. The "static"
value is the default. In this case, the object follows the layout rules of HTML. There are no special positioning rules to follow. The absolute
value positions the object relative to the parent element's position, using the top
and left
properties. The object is positioned regardless of the layout of surrounding objects. If other objects already occupy the given position, several objects will occupy the same area.The following code:
<STYLE>
.divstatic {position: absolute}
</STYLE>
<DIV ID=oSpan CLASS="divstatic">
This is a paragraph of text in a DIV.
</DIV>
<P>This is a paragraph of text as well.</P>
Creates the following:
This is a paragraph of text in a DIV.
This is a paragraph of text as well.
Notice that the absolute element is positioned on top of the other paragraph.
