Embedding Movies with Flash, Part I: Basic Methods

A Final Word

In this column we continued our series on embedding Flash objects in Web pages. We presented the basics of Flash and the FlashSound JavaScript API in Column 81, Embedding Sound with Flash, Part I: The Basics. We extended our coverage to multiple tracks and the interaction between them in Column 82, Embedding Sound with Flash, Part II: Playing Variations, and we concluded our coverage of the FlashSound JavaScript API in Column 83, Embedding Sound with Flash, Part III: Streams. We then turned our attention to native JavaScript support of Flash in Column 84, Embedding Sound with Flash, Part IV: Native JavaScript. In this column we started a mini-series on embedding Flash movies, as opposed to the Flash sound we have covered so far.

In this column we showed you how to start embedding Flash movies. We explained the changes we made to flashsoundcheck.js which we re-introduced in this column as flashmoviecheck.js. We explained how to include this JavaScript include file, and how to call Flash_embedSWF(), the main function in this include file. We then covered basic video capabilities of Flash: play, rewind, zoom, pan, replace, and superimpose. We also explained how to check the loading progress and the playing status.

In this column you have learned:

You could download the Flash Player, the Flash Embedding JavaScript include file, the swift3d.swf SWF example, and the opener.swf SWF example. You could also find these files in one zipped file.
