The Quiotix RemoteAccess Application

Overview. The Quiotix RemoteAccess application is a full-featured implementation of the server portion of the AppleTalk Remote Access (ARA) protocol, designed to run in embedded environments. With it, Macintosh users can dial into a network and access network services as if they were directly connected.

Features. Built-in error correction, compression, and SmartBuffering provide reliable connections with high throughput. Advanced security features, such as user authentication with two-way encrypted password exchange, per-user zone filtering, dialback, connection time limits, and extensive audit trails allow the administrator to tailor and monitor access as desired. Connections from both ARA 1.0 and 2.0 clients are supported.

Operation. A remote user connects to the RemoteAccess server via the standard Apple ARA client. If a dialback number has been configured for the user, the RemoteAccess server will attempt to call back the user at the preconfigured number before actually connecting the user to the network. Once the connection is established, the remote user may access network services using the standard network facilities of the Macintosh operating system.

Requirements. The Quiotix RemoteAccess application requires the services of the base AppleTalk protocols, including DDP and NBP. The Quiotix RemoteAccess application currently supports Quiotix Embedded AppleTalk. It can easily be adapted to other AppleTalk implementations.
