IMPORTANT NOTE:
This column introduces a new version of the hierarchical menu script. All information is valid at the time of writing. New browser versions released after publication may not behave as outlined. The script is constantly under revision, with new features added, problems fixed and new browser versions addressed.
Read this column, and future columns, to learn how we built the menu script.
Use the most recent version of the script, always available in HierMenus Central.

This addendum deals with modifications to the Hierarchical Menus Version 3 script for better mouseover behavior in Navigator.
You must be familiar with the script to appreciate the discussion.

Welcome to the tenth maintenance release of Hierarchical Menus, Version 3.

I believe this will be the last maintenance release that we will publish, but I think I have finally learned to "never say never."

With Version 4 of the menu script ready, why have we published two minor releases (3.09 and 3.10) back-to-back?

Many authors may not want to upgrade to Version 4 immediately, since it is a major release that will involve changes to existing pages. Several important features of Version 4, like IE5Mac support and "quieter" Navigator menus, can be easily incorporated into the existing script so Version 3 users can benefit in the interim. So we decided to include these features, before moving on.

The Problem

Menu Example:

Pass your mouse over the menu items, causing them to change font and background color.

If you are using Navigator, you will notice that there is disk access whenever an item changes look, causing the familiar "tummy-rumbling" noise.

In this article, we will get rid of "noisy" navigator menus, and replace them with "quiet," more efficient ones.
